Nov 07 - GSD Says There Is A “Lack of Government Transparency” Over Commonwealth Park

Opposition MP Selwyn Figueras has today summarized what he regards as the “latest ramblings” of the Minister for the Environment in respect of the Commonwealth Park by saying that: “The Minister clearly won't give us the estimate because he's embarrassed about how much his park is going to cost in the context of a community which was apparently broke a couple of years ago.”

This, he says, allied to his Government’s “scandalous refusal” to provide information about the activities of Credit Finance Company Limited, proves the “lack of real commitment to transparency” by the GSLP/Liberal Government.

Reacting to the Government statement, Selwyn Figueras said: "Dr. Cortes should be focusing less of his attentions on launching personal attacks on elected representatives of this community and more time on the real issues, such as his Government’s responsibility for dragging Gibraltar through the hardship of the last 20 months for nothing.”

Dr Cortes’ latest comments, he says, “sadly remain par for the course, particularly given that the electorate is now starting to see clearly through the veneer of spin which characterises this Government’s first two years in office. It is also unfortunate that Dr. Cortes continues to fall prey to his arrogance in a manner that potentially puts the wider interests of the community he is responsible for in jeopardy.”

“Dr Cortes’ lack of judgement,” says Mr Figueras, “not to mention transparency, is no laughing matter. Neither is the continuing misery endured by Gibraltarians living on both sides of the border since Dr. Cortes and his Government embarked on their 'aqui no se pesca' campaign, launched on the social media, and in respect of which the Government has performed a huge U-turn 20 months later.”

“The next general election, whenever it may be, cannot come soon enough for this community,” concluded Mr Figueras.
