Dec 23 - Government Issues Command Paper On Civil Partnership

The Government has published the Command Paper on the Civil Partnership Act.

This is a landmark piece of legislation which follows a manifesto commitment to legislate for the recognition of civil partnerships between two people regardless of gender or sexual orientation, reflected by a binding contract through the signing of an official register.

In furthering the aim of promoting equality among our citizens, it is also important to note that civil partnerships will also be open to opposite sex couples. As previously stated, the Government has sought to give due recognition to civil partners in other areas. This has required extensive research and drafting to cover areas such as benefits related to tax, pension and property rights, amongst others.

Samantha Sacramento, Minster for Equality, Social Services and the Elderly commented on the matter: “I am immensely proud to be issuing this command paper on a subject that is so important to many. This important new legislation upholds the principle of equal treatment of citizens. I wish to thank ERG for their assistance in the drafting of the legislation.”

All comments on the command paper should be sent (no later than Monday 6th January 2013) to:
