Jan 06 - 60% Of Spaniards Want King To Quit

Almost two-thirds of Spaniards want King Juan Carlos to abdicate according to a poll released yesterday. The Spanish monarch has been on the throne for 38 years.

Although he has enjoyed widespread popularity for many years of his reign, particularly because of his approachability and his crucial role during Spain’s transition to democracy following the death of Franco, his reputation has received several hard blows in recent times.

The lengthy corruption investigation into his daughter and son-in-law’s supposed embezzlement of public funds has turned the public against the Royal household. Spaniards also reacted angrily to the King’s elephant hunting trip during which he broke his hip.

The heir to the throne, however, retains the public’s confidence with the majority of those polled saying that Prince Felipe would be able to restore pride in the monarchy.
