Jan 10 - GSD Insists Government Response to Vulnerable Patient Concerns is Inadequate

gsdIn response to the Government’s latest statement on recently revealed vulnerable mentally ill patient, the Opposition has insisted that It is precisely because they have supported and worked very closely with the family that they have established the facts and gotten them correct.

The party insists that the family of said individual has made many appeals to the Government for the adequate support from a Minister, social worker, care worker or counsellor, without success. The GSD goes on to claim that the Government is attempting to turn the case into a party political ping pong game.

A GSD statement on the matter states that this individual suffers from a long-term mental disorder and has been diagnosed by a Government Psychiatrist as clinically incapable of understanding the legal process or standing trial. It is suggested that the burden of responsibility for this tragic case and abuse of this person’s fundamental basic human rights do not end with the judicial system but extend to and rest squarely on the Social Services and Care Agency.

The party goes on to say that the Government should spend less on vanity projects, festivals and parties and more on doing what they said the GSD Government should have done – building a secure facility for the care of such individuals. The case was on-going for 14 months, with little activity occurring, which caused the Judge to demand a report.

‘It is shocking and callous for the Government to hide behind ‘due process’ and not recognise the failure to this vulnerable individual who should have been provided with the appropriate care in a proper facility,’ the Opposition has claimed.
