Mar 14 - GSD Says Government Is “Plunging To New Depths Of Pettiness”

The GSD says it is surprised that the Chief Minister does not have more important things to do with his time than to read messages sent by the Leader of the Opposition to his own party members adding that, if Mr Picardo spent less time on social media and on other trivialities and more time trying to attract inward investment, Gibraltar as a whole would benefit greatly.  The GSD says that if it were not because the Chief Minister accuses the Leader of the Opposition of lying, it would “not even entertain a response to such pettiness.”

According to the GSD, the situation regarding the invitation to football matches is that the Shadow Minister for Sport, Edwin Reyes, was told directly by the President of the GFA that the Leader of the Opposition was not invited to GFA international matches because the guest list is coordinated between the GFA and No. 6 Convent Place, and the only Opposition member that was to be included in the list was the Shadow Minister for Sport.  If anyone is lying, argues the GSD, it is not the Leader of the Opposition.  The GSD regards the reaction by the Government as “typically disproportionate, misleading and contains the now wearisome theme of Blame the GSD.”

Edwin Reyes said: “While I was sports minister I never interfered in the compilation of any association guest list as the Government suggests, and my motivation in speaking to the GFA President was to ensure that the GFA appeared to be even handed and non-partisan.  For example, the Rugby association does extend invitations to the Leader of the Opposition.  Perhaps the Government should get on with the job of running Gibraltar and leave sporting associations to run their own affairs.”
