Apr 03 - Cross Frontier Group Meets With Minister For Europe

The Gibraltar/La Linea Cross Frontier Group met with the Minister for Europe David Lidington MP this morning to update him on their campaign to raise awareness of the measures taken by the Spanish government which prevents the free movement of EU citizens.

A statement from the Group says: “In August 2013 the Spanish government imposed strict checks at the Gibraltar/Spain frontier which forced people to queue for up to 7 hours to cross into Spain.  The authorities also make people who want to cross into Gibraltar wait for several hours to enter the British territory.  Thousands of these EU citizens are just going to Gibraltar where they work. They are prevented from having free passage by the Spanish authorities.”

The Cross Frontier Group which comprises employer and employee organisations in Gibraltar and in Spain was formed in October 2013 to ensure that a freely-flowing frontier exists between Gibraltar and Spain.

The Minister informed the Group that he supports their objective of having a free-flowing frontier and that as Minister for Europe he will continue to put pressure on the Spanish Government to remove these stringent checks and adopt a more measured and risk based approach to ensure a freely-flowing frontier.  Mr Lidington further reassured the Group that they enjoyed the total support of his Government and was aware of the strong political support in both Houses of Parliament.
