May 05 - Repairs for Former Administration Housing Reaches £15 Million – Claims Government

govt No.6 is today claiming that some of the former GSD administration’s major housing projects are costing the current Government approximately £15 million in the form of essential repairs and a claim for £7 million to Barclays under the OEM’s liquidation, which is being challenged by the Government.

The Government insisted that the biggest single area of expenditure will be at Nelson’s View, Bay View and Cumberland Terraces where windows and balcony doors have needed to be replaced, external walkways to be resurfaced and externals cracks repaired. Substantial other refurbishments, such as new gutters and downpipes, are also needed.

Works are also being carried out at Bishop Canilla House, parts of Waterport Terraces and Mid Harbours.

Commenting on the repair bill, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo insisted that the Government was committed to putting the faults right. He added, ‘It is our intention to complete the vast majority of the work within the next 12 months. Sadly, the money we now need to spend on some of these repairs could have been used to good effect on our other commitments and works which would have benefitted the whole community.’
