May 05 - GSD Calls For Greater Transparency In Housing Allocation

The GSD Opposition says that it notes what it describes as a “very defensive statement” issued by the Government in relation to the allocation process for the two new affordable housing schemes.

Commenting on the matter, a spokesman for the Opposition said: “The defensive nature of the statement is not surprising given the negative comments being made publicly, something also being echoed in complaints raised privately by constituents to the GSD, in relation to the lack of transparency which shrouds the allocation of these affordable homes. The complaints are understandably centering on the fact that people are being allocated homes behind closed doors when they could, and should, be allocated publicly, in the same way in which estates like Waterport Terraces were allocated. It will be recalled that in relation to those estates, the GSD Government instituted a system of public draws."

"This issue is clearly causing some consternation in the community and we can understand why. We call on the Government to institute an open and transparent process in the allocation of these homes."
