May 07 - GSD Says Chief Minister Is A “Political Hypocrite”

The GSD says that the Government’s latest statement on the power station is just another example of Mr Picardo’s “hypocrisy” and the “do as I say but not as I do” philosophy that it claims is epitomizing his tenure as Chief Minister.

A spokesperson continued: “The reality is that it is the height of hypocrisy for Mr Picardo to say that the GSD power station would have spoilt an iconic landscape at Lathbury Barracks when he is putting his political weight behind a huge stadium at Europa Point which will completely spoil one of the last open spaces in Gibraltar and area of significant importance from an environmental, heritage and cultural point of view. This is despite the fact that two of his own Ministers in the form of Dr Garcia and Dr Cortes have reservations about the project. It is Mr Picardo himself that is pushing that particular location for the stadium.

“Further, if he wants to talk about projects that spoiled the landscape in the area, he should look no further than the Incinerator built by the last GSLP Government, which involved the demolition of Governor’s Cottage and the building of a complete eyesore next to Europa Point. That eyesore was only operational for a couple of years and thanks to his party’s negligence in office, cost the taxpayer in excess of £20 million.”
