Jul 14 - GSD Shuts Down Government's Attempt to 'Embarrass Opposition Member'
The GSD has today claimed that the Government's attempts to obfuscate the issue surrounding the cost of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money on one fraud trial, by trying to professionally embarrass a member of the Opposition, is simply not going to work. The party insists that there is ‘no professional embarrassment to speak of however much the Government might try to suggest otherwise’.
Commenting on the matter, a spokesperson for the Opposition notes that The Government's reliance on legal advice, without publishing the advice or the nature of the terms on which it was sought, is an ineffective and desperate political device to silence the Opposition, and it does not change their position.
The spokesperson continued, ‘nothing changes the fact that what we are discussing is a situation where millions are spent on legal aid on one high-profile case and, all the while, hundreds of others who require a paltry fraction of that amount to pursue other legal proceedings for, e.g., non-payment of maintenance or to gain access to children in the custody of an estranged partner, live with the helplessness of being unable to pay for legal representation and a system which will not help them seek justice.
‘We would have made wholesale change by now. The GSLP's record, on the other hand? One change; one case; four defendants. Millions of taxpayers' money...’
