Jul 17 - GSD Welcomes UK Cabinet Reshuffle

phillip hammond The GSD has taken note of the UK Government’s recent extensive Cabinet shuffle, acknowledging the work done by the outgoing Foreign Secretary, William Hague. The party goes on to wish Mr. Hague all the best in his new role as Leader of the House of Commons ‘and in the future when he leaves Parliament after the next General Election’.

A GSD statement on the reshuffle also touches upon Phillip Hammond’s appointment as new Foreign Secretary noting, ‘the fact that he comes from the Defence Ministry will be welcome from a Gibraltar perspective given that he will be aware of the important role which Gibraltar plays in the defence infrastructure of the United Kingdom.  This will no doubt stand him in good stead as far as Gibraltar related issues are concerned.  It is particularly noteworthy that the Minister for Europe, Mr David Lidington, who now has significant knowledge of Gibraltar, remains in post providing an invaluable insight of Gibraltar matters to the new Foreign Secretary.’

The party goes on to mention the new Secretary of State for Defence appointment of Mr Michael Fallon. Commenting on this, Opposition Leader Daniel Feetham stated, ‘there has quite rightly been a lot of political comment in relation to what has been a significant shake up in the higher echelons of British Government over the last few days.  We as Gibraltar’s opposition look forward to meeting the new Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary when the opportunity arises.’
