Sep 29 - Pepe Baldachino Elected As GSLP Chairman

The Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party recently elected a new Chairman to succeed the outgoing Chairman, Juan Carlos Perez. Mr Perez had held that post since 2007 and had signalled his intention to stand down after the bye-election last year. He was, however, persuaded to stay in post until after the Annual General Meeting to complete his term of office. Mr Perez is a founder member of the GSLP and was a Government Minister between 1988 and 1996. He served in the Opposition between 1984 and 1988 and again between 1996 and 2003. As Chairman he was instrumental in leading the GSLP/Liberal alliance to their election victory in December 2011.

The new Party Chairman is Joseph (Pepe) Baldachino. Mr Baldachino joined the GSLP just a few weeks after it was formed and was elected into the House of Assembly (Opposition) in 1984. In 1988, he was a member of the successful GSLP slate which was elected into Government. He served as Minister for Housing and Buildings and Works until 1993 and then took over as Minister for Employment, a ministry he led until 1996. He then served in the opposition benches until 2003. The party says that Pepe “brings a wealth of experience” to the post of Chairman and is “ready to take up the challenge in leading the GSLP into the next elections.”

Mr Baldachino said, "I would like to thank Juan Carlos for all the sterling work he has done for the GSLP over the years. I am glad that he continues to be an executive member as the Party will be able the count with his experience. We are pleased that the Government is delivering the change promised in the election manifesto. We are excited with the remaining 500 days of this administration and getting ready for our second term in Government.”
