Oct 10 - Unfair System for Co-Ownership Housing Allocation - Claims GSD

mons calpe Concern has been expressed by the Opposition over the ‘lack of transparency in the process by which housing in the new co-ownership estates is being allocated’. They claim that the process is shrouded in secrecy with public money being used to subsidise ownership.

The party notes that the system should avoid unfair situations ‘where some may benefit from homes which are larger than their entitlement to the detriment of those who require them’.

Calling for full transparency, Opposition spokesperson for Housing, Edwin Reyes noted that in many cases, flats are being offered, in excess of the size that they would be entitled to under the normal housing rules.

He added, ‘the Opposition further asks if Government has reviewed the need for the construction of more rental accommodation, as per its election manifesto, for those who cannot afford to purchase a home even on a co-ownership basis, or whether this is one of those commitments which it has chosen to ignore?’
