Nov 01 – GBC Statement On Viewpoint Decision

In response to the government's statement on the Viewpoint story, GBC has issued the following statement as a clarification of its position:

“For the sake of accuracy, it is important to clarify that it is not the case that GBC invited Marlene Nahon to appear on Viewpoint. GBC invited the Opposition, as it did the Government, and was careful to channel the request for a government representative through the government's press office as the Gra Advises. The GSD nominated Ms Nahon to be their representative.

“The Corporation must also point out that according to the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority, it is not the case that a non-elected member cannot speak for the government. In a file note issued by the Authority on 17th January 2014, following a meeting between GBC and the GRA at GBC's request, the Authority stated as follows: "GRA confirmed that a government representative, invited as part of a panel for a debate can be an 'elected' or 'non-elected' member.  Yesterday, and given differences of interpretation coming to light, the Corporation sought further clarification from the GRA, who in 'part' of its reply kept to this position.  Given GBC considered the GRA was contradicting itself within its clarification, the Corporation sought further guidance from the Regulator, which was not forthcoming.”
