Nov 07 – GSD Welcomes New Bristol Route

The GSD says it welcomes the announcement by Government of the new flight connections with Gibraltar through Easyjet and emphasises, in this context, the significant investment made by the GSD Government in the new airport terminal. The GSD says that, when in Government, it recognised the real value in ensuring that Gibraltar has “proper and effective transport links with the outside world.” The airport was identified by the party, when in power, as a “linchpin” in providing such links.

There can be no doubt, says the Opposition, of the importance of the association between good transport connections and a successful economy adding that investments to grow air transport infrastructure and attract airlines and business jets “are crucial for the success of our economy.”

This aspect of our outside connection to the world has been brought into sharper focus as a result of the difficulties that we have been experiencing at the frontier, says the GSD. The Opposition says that it has made the point in the past, for example, that however good the Small Business Saturdays initiative may be we would, ultimately, be selling to the same local market in a situation where there is are difficulties at the frontier. It is important, therefore, stresses the GSD, that we bring new markets from outside Gibraltar.

Deputy Leader of the GSD, Damon Bossino, who also has shadow responsibilities for Tourism and Aviation said:

“We welcome the announcement by my opposite number, Mr Neil Costa, and congratulate him and all of his team for securing this new connection. I am sure we can all agree that improving Gibraltar’s connections to the outside world can only be a good thing for our economic development and that this Government now has at its disposal an excellent airport terminal, which my party in Government had the vision to build. I sincerely hope that we can improve on further connections from outside of the UK.”
