Jan 07 - ERG Calls for Legal Recognition for Transgender People in Gibraltar
The Equality Rights Group has called for a need in 2015 to recognize the rights of transgender people within Gibraltar’s community. Chairman Felix Alvarez noted that ‘it’s not a question of numbers, but of fairness, kindness and justice.’
Mr. Alvarez wishes for Gibraltarian Ms Joanna Attard, formerly John, to have her gender identity officially recognized in law. The group insists that many other countries around the world, including the UK and Spain recognize transgender people in law.
Commenting on Ms Attard, Felix explained that ‘many will already know Joanna as a much-loved member of the Gibraltar community who has earned the respect of family, friends, employers and all around her.’ He added that the manner in which she has openly lived in her gender identity deserves the issue to be addressed now ‘without further delay’.
The Group has approached Government for the issues to be placed on the table in order for the necessary dialogue, discussions and resolutions to be achieved.
