Jan 08 - Government Repeats That Work At Varyl Begg Went To Lowest Tenderer

The Government says it regrets that the Opposition “continue to take politics to the gutter” by imputing the motives of others and distorting the facts. It is obvious, says Number Six, that “lacking in substance, in polices and credibility all that the GSD Opposition have to offer Gibraltar is gossip, accusations and innuendo.”

The Government says that the latest Opposition statement on the award of a contract for works at Varyl Begg Estate is a case in point.

The most important fact, according to the Government, is that this work was “awarded to the lowest option” under the Approved Contractor Scheme that was set up by the GSD when they were in office.

The Government goes on to explain that there were two contracts. The first was the contract for resurfacing of roads, parking areas and linear road drainage. Three submissions were received for this work. The second was the contract for paving, street furniture and associated works. Three submissions were also received for this work. The successful contractor, says the Government,  provided the lowest cost combination to carry out both contracts.

The work was therefore awarded, under the Approved Contractors List, for the lowest possible price.

“The Opposition can try to twist this in whatever way they like but they cannot get away from this fact,” concluded a statement.
