Feb 13 - GSD Condemns Margallo Statement

gsdThe GSD has deplored and condemned the recent announcement that the Instituto Cervantes is to close. The party has rubbished his statements not recignising the institution of the Chief Minister of Gibraltar’s constitution. A statement released by the Opposition insisted that his decision to close the Institute ‘represents a retrograde step in the context of the improvement of relations with the Spanish people at a cultural and indeed human level, an aim which is espoused by all political parties in Gibraltar but which has always been a corner stone of GSD policy.

The decision is also contemptible at a political level. Although of less significance than the resilement in relation to EU aviation legislation, it is a further dishonouring of what was achieved in the Cordoba agreements during the GSD’s time in office with the previous Spanish Government.’

The Party further adds that despite statements made by the likes of Mr. Margallo, the GSD ‘continues to advocate a policy of respect and dialogue with Spain. The Party is firm in its belief that the policy of continuing to spread this message at every political level in Spain, as the Leader of the Opposition has been doing for neatly two years, is the right policy for Gibraltar.’

They believe that restraint and careful handling of Spain ‘without reneging on our position in relation to issues of sovereignty is the best answer that we can give to Mr Margallo.’
