Feb 16 - US Congressman Re-files Resolution Pushing for Gibraltar Self-Determination
The US continues to show its support for the Rock, with US Congressman George Holding, a Republican member for North Carolina leading a group of Congressmen in filing a formal Resolution recognizing Gibraltar’s right to self-determination, in the House of Representatives.
Approximately 11 other Representatives from both sides of the house have expressed interest in signing the Resolution, which explains that the US has relied on Gibraltar’s military facilities on numerous occasions, particularly in World War 2. The Resolution further acknowledges that ‘Gibraltar has the right, under the UN Charter and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to determine its own future.’
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo noted that the re filing of the resolution, following the election of a new Congress, ‘demonstrates the commitment of our friends in the US Congress and in particular Congressman Holding's clear support for Gibraltar.’
