Feb 23 - GSD Continues to Drive LNG Installation Issues

gsd The Opposition has raised further concerns about the use of Liquified Natural Gas near populated areas. The party insists that the Government has made the decision to locate the LNG installation in the Detached or North Mole, without having the necessary safety reports beforehand. They further added that ‘It is obvious from the Government’s own communiqués that all the necessary health and safety reports (including gas cloud models and blast risk assessments) were not obtained before the decision to build an LNG Installation at the Detached or the North Mole was made.’

In response to the Government’s claim that they were not in a position to publish safety reports associated with the power station due to containing commercially sensitive information, the GSD has pointed out ‘a huge distinction between safety reports associated with the power station and safety reports associated with the supply of it via an LNG storage installation’. They claim that it is clear ‘no reports have been obtained prior to the decision to locate an LNG storage installation at the Detached or North Mole’

An opposition statement added, ‘No responsible Government would make a decision to build an LNG installation so near a densely populated area based on the reports of those who are going to build the power station and therefore have a commercial interest in the project going ahead.’ The party further claims that the Government does not fully understand the safety implications of the project, noting that there has been no opportunity to host an open discussion on the matter.
