Feb 23 - Government Assures Public of LNG Safety

While the feud over the safety of the LNG Power Station continues, the Government has rejected Opposition concerns by ‘reassuring the public that the tender for the new dual-fired power station was only awarded after it was established that Liquefied Natural Gas could be safely delivered and stored in Gibraltar.’

They claim that a preliminary assessment was conducted in order to determine that the supply and storage of Liquefied Natural Gas would be viable for the Port area. Furthermore the Government contracted the Health and Safety Laboratory in the UK ‘to provide consulting services on all aspects of Liquefied Natural Gas’. After carrying out a risk-based assessment they determined that ‘both a dual-fired power station and a Liquefied Natural Gas storage facility were safe and practicable and a decision was taken to proceed with the project.’

The Government also claims that it is currently engaging expert advice with regards to the implementation and delivery of the new dual-fired power station. They further assure the public that the storage facility ‘cannot explode’.
