Mar 19 - Opposition Calls For Espejo Publico Rectification
The GSD says it notes that the Government has commenced legal action in the Spanish courts for rectification and correction against the Spanish daily newspaper ABC in relation to various defamatory remarks made against Gibraltar. Provided that the Government is in possession of advice that the claim is a sound one in law, the GSD Opposition says it is entirely supportive of this step.
Just ahead of the debate in Parliament on a Motion presented by the Leader of the Opposition on the findings of the Dr Giraldi Inquiry, the Opposition says it would remind the Government that Members of Parliament of both the parties in Government participated in the Espejo Publico Programme in Antena 3 repeating allegations about the Dr Giraldi Home which led the producers of the program to describe the home as the “House of Horrors” with what it calls the “consequential stigma” for members of staff and this community. The GSD says that those allegations have of course been proved to be entirely unfounded by the Inquiry.
Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Feetham said: “At a time when the Government is rightly taking legal action against the ABC Newspaper for defamatory comments about Gibraltar, it is incumbent on the Chief Minister to correct one of the biggest defamations ever perpetrated on Gibraltar and its institutions by a Spanish media outlet, aided and abetted by Members of his Parliamentary team. Defamations against Gibraltar should be challenged wherever they may originate. That is why my Motion calls on the Chief Minister to write to the producers of the Espejo Publico Programme to set the record straight.”
