Mar 25 - Garcia In Washington To Continue Gibraltar Lobby

The Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia is in Washington to continue the Government's lobbying efforts with politicians and influential organisations in the United States.

It will be recalled that a resolution which supported Gibraltar's self-determination was tabled in the US House of Representatives during the last Congress. The resolution was sponsored by Congressman George Holding. It was tabled again a few weeks ago following the Congressional elections late last year. This second time it was backed by more Congressmen than the first time round.

During his visit to Washington, the Deputy Chief Minister will be meeting with members of Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties on Capitol Hill.

Dr Garcia will also discuss the Government's strategy in these matters with David Liston from the Gibraltar-American Council and with former Democratic Congressman Jim Davis from the law firm Holland and Knight. This will include exploring different ways in which the Council might assist the Government's efforts.

Commenting on the visit, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said:

"This visit to Washington is part of the Government's policy to put forward the arguments in support of Gibraltar and of our right to self-determination to decision-makers in the United States. The tabling of a Resolution in the US Congress was an important and indeed a historic event given that this was the first time ever that such a formal level of support for Gibraltar has been expressed in the United States. I will take the opportunity to thank our supporters and to put across our point of view to others."
