Mar 25 - Labour Inspectorate Revamp to Push Employers to Meet Statutory Requirements

costa As part of the modernization and digitization of the Government’s Employment Department, Minister Neil Costa today revealed a new system for the Labour inspectorate to work under. The revamped team will include a Senior Labour Inspector, two inspectors and two support inspectors. They will be tasked with ensuring that employers in Gibraltar are meeting all regulations via a new programme of inspection that is being developed.

The programme will allow the department to assess compliance of annual leave, sick leave, redundancy pay, notice periods and minimum wage, amongst other statutory requirements. Once the programme is approved by the Director of Employment, it will carry out regular inspections of businesses to verify that all employees are registered with the relevant Government Departments.

The reason for the revamp is to ease any revenue lost by Government via tax and social insurance.

The Labour Inspectors will also be able to offer advice to employers and employees on matters regarding legislation and any other queries relating to their rights.

The revamp will further see the digitization of many of the employment forms that employers and employees currently have to fill out manually and return to the ETB. Under the new system, they will be able to be filled out online. Minister Costa insisted that this tied in with his responsibility for Commercial Affairs, which is working towards easing administrative burdens by moving things online.
