Apr 08 - GSD’s Isobel Ellul-Hammond To Leave Politics

The Opposition MP Isobel Ellul-Hammond has announced that she will leave politics and not stand at the next General Election. Here is her full statement:

“The last few months have been life changing due for me to medical reasons.  This has caused me to reassess my life and decide on a different path.  I have been seeking alternate employment and have been successful in an area very close to my heart which will allow me to continue to give something back to the community, as the GHA’s Cancer Services Coordinator.

“As from today’s date, I therefore relinquish my portfolio responsibilities of Health, Social Services and Civil Contingencies and go into the Backbench of Parliament until the General Election is called.  For these reasons I have therefore decided not to stand for re-election at the next General Election.

“I want to thank Danny Feetham for his friendship and the GSD for the support and confidence they have shown in me these last few years and I wish them well.”

Daniel Feetham, the Leader of the Opposition, commented:

“Politics in a small community like Gibraltar and Opposition politics in particular can be very difficult. After a life threatening experience, it is understandable that Isobel wants a change of direction and she had already indicated several months ago that she would not be standing at the next election. This new job is an opportunity for her to do something she enjoys whilst at the same time continuing to contribute to the wellbeing of Gibraltar. I am entirely supportive of her decision and I wish her all the best."
