May 11 – Conservative Party In Gibraltar Welcomes UK Election Result

The Conservative Party in Gibraltar says it welcomes the result of the UK general election.

The party says it particularly congratulates the Conservatives in St Ives, (the UK branch which it is formally are part of together with the Scilly Isles) in gaining a seat previously held by the Lib Dems for Derek Thomas.

In other constituencies, the party notes that Jack Lopresti, leader of the Gibraltar Group in Parliament, obtained an increase in his share of votes, and Grant Schapps, party chairman, who visited Gibraltar as part of the EU election campaign, held his seat in Welwyn.

Former Gibraltar MEP Neil Parish also secured an increase of nearly 4% in Tiverton and Honiton.

The party says that, as it has now secured a working majority in the house without having to do any deals with other parties, it “can now push on with delivering a brighter future for Britain.”

The party ended with the following reassurance: “Although some ill informed concern has been expressed locally about the impact of any future changes in the relationship between the UK and the EU in relation to Gibraltar, it should be noted that the Conservatives are the only party with a explicit commitment to Gibraltar in their manifesto.  Their win is good news for Gibraltar and excellent news for the UK.”
