Jun 04 - Chair Of European Parliament Petitions Committee In Gibraltar

The Chair of the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament, Cecilia Wikstrom MEP arrived in Gibraltar today on a fact-finding visit. She is also a member of the LIBE Committee which covers Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (JHA).

The visit has come about as a result of a number of petitions that have crossed her desk from individuals and organisations in Gibraltar which have prompted Ms Wikstrom to learn more about Gibraltar.

A detailed programme has been prepared by the Office of the Deputy Chief Minister which is organising the visit.

This will include a meeting with the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia. There will be a briefing and viewing of the situation at the land frontier in order to obtain a better understanding of the issues on the ground. Ms Wikstrom will also be briefed on environmental matters by the Minister for the Environment Dr John Cortes and on JHA matters by the Minister for Justice Gilbert Licudi. She will also meet the Minister for Equality Samantha Sacramento and pay a courtesy call to the Gibraltar Parliament.

Commenting on the visit, the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia said:

“The Government is delighted to welcome Cecilia Wikstrom to Gibraltar and to provide briefings on a number of matters that affect Gibraltar in Europe. The truth is that Gibraltar has a very good and a very positive story to tell and it is important to spread that message. This also ties in with the policy of the Government to promote Gibraltar in Europe and Europe in Gibraltar.”
