Jun 18 - GSD Calls For Openness And Transparency On Ministerial Housing Allocation

The GSD has called on the Minister for Housing to be “open and transparent” over the direct allocation by her of 155 flats. The party has called on the Minister to provide a complete breakdown of the reasons why each of those flats was allocated by her.

GSD Housing Spokesman Rafael Benzaquen said: “Flats are allocated objectively on the basis of advice from the Housing Allocation Committee. Yesterday in Parliament, the Minister admitted that she had personally allocated 155 flats outside the usual procedure.  Only 36 of those related to people who needed to be decanted because their properties were flooded.  Even in relation to those instances, we have to say there are many people who come to us complaining that their flats are in appallingly damp conditions and they are not decanted. How does the Minister make value judgments about some cases and refuses to intervene in others? What about the other 119 who were given flats by the Minister directly and were not decanted? Those who have been patiently on the waiting list for years deserve an explanation. A full break down of reasons should be provided”.
