Jul 08 - Trafalgar Interchange Traffic Improvements

As part of the Government of Gibraltar’s Sustainable Traffic, Transport & Parking Plan several traffic improvements will be introduced to the area of the Trafalgar Interchange.

These are:

1. A new traffic light controlled crossing will be unveiled for use as from 11.00am Wednesday 8 July 2015 at Ragged Staff Road. This will be a much welcomed crossing on a road that has been identified to be a main pedestrian route from north to south and vice versa.

2. A new zebra crossing pilot scheme will be introduced from the traffic island west of Trafalgar Cemetery to the western end of the area by Lord Nelson's statue. This will provide an improved pedestrian access route in the area which is lacking at present. The effectiveness of this new crossing will be monitored over a period of 3 months.

3. A new traffic circulation system from the northern approach from Main Street to the main roundabout will be marked out. The right traffic lane will be devoted solely as a filter lane for traffic travelling to Queensway and towards the north. The left traffic lane will remain for traffic travelling towards the south and back towards the town area.

The Minister for Transport, Traffic and Technical Services, Paul Balban, said: “I am delighted to see the introduction of these much needed pedestrian developments at the Trafalgar Interchange. This will go a long way in improving safety and the general pedestrian experience.

These changes have been a direct result of the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan and was also something that featured as a result of the public consultation process.”
