Aug 24 - GSD Says LNG Power Station Is “Quite Obviously A Done Deal”

The GSD has today said that the media reports that at the beginning of this year the Government signed contracts with MAN Diesel & Turbo for the provision of six engines for the LNG power station to be built "barely 300 meters away" from Waterport Terraces and not much further from Harbour Views, “demonstrates that the Government has been hell bent on proceeding with the project even without the relevant safety reports being in place.” The GSD also points out that in addition to the contract for the engines with MAN Diesel and Turbo, the Government had also already signed contracts with Bouygues Energies & Services SAS for the construction of the power station.

Trevor Hammond, GSD environmental spokesman said: "This is quite obviously a done deal. If the Government had been serious about putting safety first, it would have obtained comprehensive safety reports before committing the tax payer by signing these contracts. If the Government claim we are wrong then they should prove it by publishing those comprehensive safety reports. We are talking about the lives of people and Government has to be open and transparent about this. Nearly four years after Government announced this project, a project for which they had no electoral manifesto mandate, there have been no safety reports published. Even the Environmental Impact Assessment published this month is woefully inadequate as has been pointed out by NGOs with no political axe to grind."
