Sep 08 - GSD Believes Gibraltar Should Show Solidarity In Helping Syrian Refugees
The GSD has backed the Government of Gibraltar's willingness to give Syrian refugees a home in Gibraltar.
Daniel Feetham, leader of the opposition, said: "The whole of Gibraltar, as indeed, the world is witnessing the painful images of Syrian refugees fleeing the war in their country. The Syrian conflict started in 2011 and although millions have been displaced, exiled or have died, as in most international conflicts, the image of a three year old child being washed on a beach in Turkey last week, has encapsulated both the horrors of this tragedy and the need for Europe to do much more than it has been doing.
"In this context, the GSD Opposition believes that Gibraltar should show solidarity in the attempts to help ease this humanitarian tragedy by accepting into our community one or two families.
"Gibraltar has always been a charitable community with a huge social conscience. Some will recall when we opened our frontier to Spanish Republicans seeking asylum during the Spanish civil war. The time has come for us to do our bit again, to help those fleeing this appalling war."
