Sep 18 - Heritage Trust Visits New University
Trustees of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust were recently invited to visit the new Gibraltar University building at Europa Point. The University has been sited within the 19th Century Defensible Barracks complex and has made use of the existing buildings and features for the purposes of the University. The Trust has been involved in the process through its role on the DPC.
Several Trustees attended and were impressed with the use of space, materials, the general concept and design and the way the conversion has been achieved. The Trust says it hopes to work with the University in the future to share resources, exchange of ideas and become involved in other collaborations.
A statement from the Trust continued: “We strongly believe in the beneficial use of our historic buildings and structures to ensure their preservation – this conversion, and that of the old St. Bernard’s Hospital, provide a wonderful educational provision for our young people and an opportunity for fostering and cementing Gibraltar's links in the international academic field whilst also standing as a physical link to our past and the story of where we have come from as a people.
“We hope the general public will take advantage of the University Open Day this weekend to visit the new facility.”
