Sep 23 - First Ever World Maritime Day Celebrations To Be Held In Gibraltar

The Gibraltar Port Authority, together with a number of entities, will be hosting Gibraltar’s first ever World Maritime Day celebrations for families and children of all ages on Sunday 27th September from 10am to 2pm.

Essential services such as the Royal Gibraltar Police, the ambulance services, Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service, HM Customs and the Royal Navy will be present on the day, as well as commercial shipping operators.

Those visiting will have the opportunity to climb aboard different vessels and see what the maritime industry has to offer. There will also be boat transfers from the port to and from Gib Dock.

The fun doesn’t stop there, with display stands, children attraction and activities, and food and beverage available on the day. Entry is free for all, and those interested in attending just have to make their way to the cruise terminal.

Every year the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) marks World Maritime Day to raise awareness of the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment. The theme for this year’s World Maritime Day on Thursday 24th September is ‘Maritime education and Training’.

Deputy Captain of the Port Manolo Tirado said: “The maritime industry is very wide. We have to remember that when we talk about the maritime industry it’s not only the fact that we are offering jobs, but the maritime industry at large.

“This gives people the chance to hear about what is out there."

Senior Port Officer Richard Requena said those involved are all looking forward to the event and are expecting lots of people to attend the event.

CEO and Captain of the Port Bob Sanguinetti commented: "I am keen to give the younger members of the public a glimpse of the sorts of careers available to them in this exciting environment."

Minister for the Port, the Hon Paul Balban, said: “World Maritime Day will give us the opportunity to showcase the fantastic work done by so many people across the full breadth of our vibrant maritime community.”
