Sep 28 - Royal Gibraltar Police Granted Freedom Of The City

In the year that the Royal Gibraltar Police is celebrating its 185th Anniversary in Gibraltar, it has been bestowed the highest civic honour by being granted the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar.

Parliament granted this honour in recognition of the history, hard work and excellent service to Gibraltar earlier this year, with the ceremony carried out at Casemates Square on Saturday morning.

Receiving a casket with the Freedom Scroll signed by Mayor Adolfo Canepa, together with the Gibraltar Medallion of Honour, as well as the medal and certificate of the Freedom of the City to the Royal Gibraltar Police, Commissioner of Police Eddie Yome thanked Gibraltar Parliament and said this was the greatest honour bestowed upon the RGP.

Speaking to friends, families and dignitaries, Commissioner Yome said: “It is with great pride and honour that I receive this scroll bestowing the Freedom of the City on the Royal Gibraltar Police.

“It is certainly a momentous and joyous occasion. I am receiving this as Commissioner of the day, and those past who have been instrumental in shaping this police force for what it is today – a professional, modern and efficient police service.”

He took the opportunity to thank the retired police officers and serving officers for their hard work in the police force.

Before the RGP marched up Main Street, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo took the opportunity to congratulate the RGP on behalf of Prime Minister David Cameron.

He added: “The greatest honour you have received is no doubt the Royal prefix approved by Her Majesty the Queen herself.

“Today, you receive from your own people the greatest recognition of your hard work. Of our respect. And of the honest affection of the People and Parliament of Gibraltar.

“Thank you to all of you from all of us. You are truly deserving and overdue recipients of the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar.”
