Oct 16 - RAF Air Cadets Pass Annual Inspection With Flying Colours

RAF Air Cadets from No.2 Overseas (Gibraltar) Squadron recently passed their Annual Formal Inspection.

Officer Commanding Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Air Training Corps, Wing Commander David Miller conducted the inspection and praised the Squadron’s effort, he said:

“The cadets were immaculately turned out, I was particularly impressed by the Parade and March Past.”

It was the first time in Gibraltar for Squadron Leader Nathan Wilks, who was escorting Wing Commander Miller, he was particularly struck by the support and facilities available to cadets in Gibraltar, he said:

“It is especially good to see the Squadron being so well supported by the parents, civilian committee and staff. As an overseas based unit the Squadron offers virtually everything that a UK based Squadron does, which is fantastic.”

Officer Commanding the Gibraltar Squadron, Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Ivan Caward was delighted with how well the whole evening went, he said:

“The Squadron is inspected twice yearly by our Headquarters based in Norwich but the September inspection is the most formal. This year we were able to witness two C130 Hercules aircraft landing just before the parade, the cadets and their parents were able to get up close just prior to our inspection which really set the scene for a proud display on parade.”

During his visit Wing Commander Miller joined the cadets on the rifle range at Buffadero Training Camp. He was able to witness newly qualified cadets firing the L98 A2 Cadet GP Rifle for the first time and award a promotion to Flight Sgt Rachel Bees, he said:

“It has been a very good day on the range; the cadets clearly know what they are doing and have also completed Heartstart training while not firing. To perfectly round up my visit I had the pleasure of promoting Sgt Rachel Bees to Flight Sergeant.”

The newly qualified cadets were pleased to be able to put their recently taught skills into practice, Cadet Drury said:

“After weeks of training on the rifle, learning about safety and how to strip and clean a weapon to pass a weapons handling test, it was good to finally fire the weapon, not only that, but I also managed to hit the target with every round.”
