Feb 15 - Gibtelecom Launches 4G+ On The Rock

Gibtelecom launched its Gibtel mobile 4G+ service, with mobile broadband speeds of up to 225Mbps, at its John Mackintosh Square centre this evening.

There were live demonstrations of the new technology for those attending before the new network was launched by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, Gibtelecom CEO Tim Bristow and Jose Antonio Lopez Muñoz, CEO of Ericsson Iberia.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Picardo took the opportunity to congratulate the people in Gibtelecom who have worked towards providing the service today.

He added: “Of course the important thing behind all of this work is the investment that is being made in ensuring that Gibraltar has the highest standard of mobile operating facilities in Europe.

“£10million of investment, but I am equally proud to say, not charging the consumer a penny more for the most avant-garde system they can use within the European continent.

“I am very proud, of course, to say that Gibraltar is the first nation to be entirely covered by 4G+.“

Commenting on the “awesome difference” between 3G and 4G+ data speeds, Mr Bristow added: “We are in an age where folk are increasingly reliant on being able to communicate on the move, and this substantial investment in a new faster mobile network should facilitate their every need.”

Jansen Reyes, Director of Technology at Gibtelecom, explained that the upgrade to a 4G+ network will provide customers with higher speeds, improved coverage and less buffering.

The build out of Gibtelecom’s 4G+ network was done in partnership with technology giant Ericsson, who were at the launch event.

The company also announced its new mobile commercial offerings which increase the date available on existing packages by up to four times. The company will not charge anything extra for 4G+, but both pre-paid and post-paid customers who have 4G ready handsets will need a new SIM card – either ordered online or in the John Macktintosh Square shop.

Gibtelecom also launched a new set of pay monthly plans, which for the first time include a bundle of local minutes, text messages and data, with options for customers to top up with more data if necessary.

In addition, customers who purchase a contract with the new mobile plan and have SuperSwift broadband with Gibtelecom, will have both their mobile data allowances and home broadband speeds doubled after Easter.
