Feb 23 - Church Service Held To Mark 100th Birthday

A service was held to mark the 100th birthday of Gibraltar’s “national treasure” Pepe Fabre at the King’s Chapel today.

The celebration service was organised by the Order of the British Empire Gibraltar Association, and was led by Reverend Mike Wagstaff.

The Governor Edward Davis said it is a privilege and honour to pay tribute to Gibraltar’s national treasure today, marking Mr Fabre’s achievements during his lifetime, including his role within the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, the Royal British Legion and various associations on the Rock.

He added: “100 years of helping other people, 100 years of relentless service to Gibraltar, and 100 years of generous thoughts and deeds for everyone.”

His Excellency said Mr Fabre will lead the gun salute on the 10th of June to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday.

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo handed over a card from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and wished Mr Fabre a happy birthday on behalf of the people of Gibraltar.  He added that while people paid remembrance to those who left Gibraltar during the evacuation, it was important to remember those like Mr Fabre who stayed behind and joined the Allied Forces.

Former Mayor Tony Lima read out tributes to the centenarian by former Governor Sir Adrian Johns and his wife Susie, as well as a letter from Royal British Legion President Peter Wilkinson.
