Mar 10 – Students Explore Gender Equality Challenges

Minister Sacramento this morning addressed Year 12 students from both Westside and Bayside Schools on the topics raised by International Women’s Day. Ms Sacramento spoke about her role as Gibraltar’s first Minister for Equality.

Speaking about her approach to issues of gender inequality in the workplace she said: “Our priority has to be that we have a level playing field for everybody – it should always be the best person for the job and doing things on merit. You shouldn’t be stopped from doing something just because you’re a woman.”

Ms Sacramento urged the students to fulfill their potential and not let any cultural or social barriers to stand in their way.

“It’s about feeling empowered and striving to achieve whatever it is that you want to do,” she said.

After the Minister’s speech, there was a brief prize giving ceremony for the winners of the school’s poster and video competition on the theme: ‘Gender equality means progress for all’.

Winners included: Molly Smart won a prize for her poster which featured a silhouette of Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist for female education.

Laura Abensur took a prize for a poster which brought together a man’s face and a woman’s face.

In the video category, Year 9 students Katie Norton and Lizzie Lane won a prize for an impressive Lego animation.
