Mar 17 - Senior Teachers Attend Health Workshops

Senior teachers across schools in Gibraltar are being given instructions on how to deal with a number of illnesses which can crop up in the classroom at a workshop today.

The day-long workshop held at St Bernard's Hospital will explore different issues such as healthy eating, diabetes, infections, allergies, asthma, HIV, epilepsy, drugs, addictions, sexual health and mental health.

Dr Vijay Kumar, the GHA’s Director of Public Health, said the GHA thought it would be a good idea to offer this type of course after teachers would ask about how to deal with ailments in the classroom. Medical experts in their individual fields are invited to speak to the teachers and answer any questions they may have.

Sarah Payas, Education Co-ordinator at the Department of Education, said: “We think it’s very important, and as we have a high turnover of senior teachers and head teachers, we thought it would be a good idea to run the course again and keep them up to date with what is happening.

“Of course, things in the health services can change and how to deal with the illnesses can change, so it is important for us to refresh senior teachers with this course.”

She adds that the aim of the course is to ensure teachers feel confident with any situation, which could arise in the classroom.
