Jun 03 - Winners Announced For Gibraltar Women's Association's First Photography Competition

The theme for the Gibraltar Women’s Association’s first photographic competition was the diverse representation of women and to celebrate their positive achievements and their valuable contribution to their communities.

The winners for the competition were announced at the exhibition launched in John Mackintosh Hall on Wednesday evening, attended by Samantha Sacramento, Minister for Women, and lifelong member and former chairperson Mariola Summerfield.

The competition was launched on International Women’s Day and forms part of the GWA’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. A total of 58 entries were submitted from 24 participants, and 43 were short-listed and put on display.

First prize went to Kyrane Finlayson, and judges from Gibraltar Photographic Society and the Gibraltar Women’s Association, said her photo was well composed and captured a moment of shared emotions and a strong bond between the elderly lady and two younger ones.

Second prize went to Stephen Hermida who took a photograph of a woman in Ethiopia. Judges said his was a powerful, haunting and arresting image, adding: “Not only does it depict a woman whose strength of character comes across well, but it also shows that she has to be strong and resilient because she lives in a world fraught with challenges.”

Francesca Makey was awarded third place for her photograph which showed a woman holding up a set of books about women. Her sister Christina collected the prize on Francesca’s behalf, and the judges added that the photo was a simple, well composed image which projected a strong and direct image.

There were also a number of commendations, which went to Stephen Ignacio, Nicole Jones, Gerry Fagan and Rosie Fernandez.

Marlene Dalli, from the association, said: “The photographs celebrate a number of qualities: tenacity and faith in the face of adversity, love and affection, family bonds, self-sacrifice, the positive value of education, exercise, mindfulness, self-care, voluntary work and self-belief, all of which are essential to self-development and community life.”

All photographs will remain on display in the Lower Exhibition Hall at the John Mackintosh Hall until Tuesday 14th June.
