Jun 07 - ERG Warns: ‘Gibraltar Must Never Be Vulnerable Again!’

The Equality Rights Group (ERG) has said that the EU Referendum on the 23rd June will go down as a key date in Gibraltar’s history.

“Very soon, we will be holding a Referendum to stay in or leave the European Union,” ERG Chairman, Felix Alvarez, has stated today.

“ERG supports Government, Opposition and all members of the IN Campaign in unreservedly opting to stay in. There are many reasons for Gibraltar why it is better to do so, but, as an equality, civil and human rights organisation, we have absolutely no reservation in saying more progress has been made in advancing people’s rights under the EU than before.

“Workers’ rights such as regulated working time, paid holiday entitlements, protection of workers on transfer from one employer to another, rights of agency workers, collective redundancy consultation, protection against discrimination, part-time and fixed-term employees’ rights, pregnancy and maternity rights, parental leave, and data protection are just a few, among others, which we take for granted, and they all have their roots in EU law. We believe in working to construct the solidarity of countries. We ask you to vote to stay IN; though we are under no illusions: the dice can roll either way. It can be Brexit or Bremain. The Gibraltar vote could be decisive!

“Yet one thing is for sure, 23rd June 2016 must be a game-changer for us in Gibraltar! It must go down as a key date in our history. It must be Resolve Day.

“We cannot allow Gibraltar to be so vulnerable ever again!” continued Mr. Alvarez.

“Never again must anyone permit Gibraltar to be this dependent on the decisions of others!

“The EU Referendum is a wake-up call to all Gibraltarians. The politics of the past eight decades or so have served us well; but it is clear that we need to reconfigure the way we have become dependent on too many outside forces for our economy, for our sustainability as a nation, and for our political Peoplehood. We have a lot of talking and a lot of thinking to do. The answers are not simple, but building a nation is a determined task. One we are capable of achieving,” the statement ended.
