Aug 11 - New Plaque Unveiled To Mark Gibraltar’s First Public Housing

A new plaque at Harington Building, Cumberland Road, was unveiled this morning by the Minister for Housing Samantha Sacramento.

The plaque, which has been supplied by the Heritage Trust, replaces the original plaque and explains that Harington building was the first block built under the Gibraltar Housing Scheme, the first public housing scheme in Gibraltar. Before this scheme was launched, those who did not own their home had to rent private properties. The building was finished in 1938 and was refurbished in 2010.

Harington Building was named after General Sir Charles Harington, who was the Governor at the time. General Harington was a British Army officer noted for his service during WWI and Chanak crisis. He retired in 1938, having been Governor of Gibraltar since May 1933.

Minister Sacramento said: “It is important to recognize the historical, heritage and social importance of this building.”
