Aug 18 – ERG Expresses Concern For Migrants
The Equality Rights Group has expressed “interest and concern” following information regarding the landing of a number of individuals on Gibraltar territory. As yet, the group says it is unsure if it is looking at a situation of “economic migration or refugee or asylum status.”
A statement released this afternoon continued: “We fully understand that there will be important security issues surrounding situations of this sort, and our community and government are rightly cautious. We are, nonetheless, a rule of law society and trust that all legal safeguards and procedures for the handling of such individuals and situations will be fully enforced.
“ERG has contacted the Chief Minister to express that trust in both Government and the RGP, and look forward to eventual confirmation that all international rules and procedures applicable to this, admittedly, fairly novel and worrying situation will be made to apply.
“It behoves us as a fair and democratic society to stand with our head held high before the international community to safeguard a proper approach to delicate issues of this kind.”
