Oct 07 - Royal Engineers Mark Freedom Of Gibraltar

The Corps of Royal Engineers will mark its Freedom of Gibraltar with a series of events tomorrow (Saturday). 75 Engineer Regiment, a Reserve Regiment based in the North-West of England, will have the honour of representing the Corps of Royal Engineers.

A Memorial Parade by both serving and retired members of the Corps will take place in Grand Casemates Square at 5.50pm. The inspecting officer will be Major General Richard J Cripwell CBE. Immediately following the Memorial Parade the Corps of Royal Engineers will exercise its Freedom of Gibraltar by marching from Grand Casemates Square to Cathedral Square. His Worship Mayor of Gibraltar The Honourable Adolfo J Canepa OBE, GMH, M.P will take the salute as the Parade passes the House of Assembly on Main Street.

The Corps of Royal Engineers has a long and close affiliation with Gibraltar, the first unit of Royal Engineers were raised here in 1772 and some 200 years later the Honorary Freedom of Gibraltar was conferred on the Corps. This momentous occasion will once again be celebrated in the Corps’ 300th year since its founding 1716.
