Oct 14 - Gibraltar Museum Attended The World Heritage UK Conference In Wales

The Gibraltar Museum attended the World Heritage UK Conference held over two days from the 10th October 2016 in Caernarfon, North Wales.

On achieving UNESCO World Heritage status in July of this year, the Gorham’s Cave Complex became the 30th site within the United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories. World Heritage UK is the organisation that brings together these sometimes very different sites and aims to promote and raise the profile of World Heritage Sites at home and abroad. The key elements of this are the advocating for support and resources, promoting the Sites’ values and facilitating networking, training and sharing of good practice.

The UK list of World Heritage Sites includes such well known and diverse locations as the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, the Tower of London, Hadrian’s Wall and Stonehenge. A full list and more information can be seen on the WHUK website www.worldheritageuk.org which will soon also feature the Gibraltar site.

The conference was opened by Welsh Government Minister for Skills and Science, Julie James AM and included well known speakers such as Sir Neil Cossons. Sue Davies and Marcello Sanguinetti represented the Gibraltar Museum and gave a presentation on the Gorham’s Cave Complex and the inscription process, detailing the commitment and investment in infrastructure works that HM Government of Gibraltar has provided, together with the importance of the scientific research that has taken place over the last 25 years and continues to this day.
