Oct 17 - Nursing And Midwifery Conference An ‘Outstanding Success’

The seventh Nursing and Midwifery Conference, which took place last week at the Europa Retreat Centre and was attended by 115 healthcare professionals.

The theme was “Innovation in Practice” with an emphasis on new ways of working in order to enhance the experiences of patients and families.

Keynote speaker Professor Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, focused on how professionals can work together to provide high standards of safe, evidence-based, person-centered care using the 6Cs Nursing Values: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage and Commitment to ensure nurses and multi-disciplinary teams collaborate and focus on the individuals in their care and what really matters to them.

The conference has been described by participants as an outstanding success - extremely informative, engaging, exciting and energising. The atmosphere was lively and relaxed with excellent opportunities for networking with nurses, students and pupils from the Gibraltar Health Authority, Elderly Residential Services, the Care Agency and Cancer Relief all presenting in round table sessions or engaging fully and participating in them. A number of other members of the multi-disciplinary teams attended including representatives from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Health Promotion.

Sir Jonathan Asbridge, Group Clinical Director of Health Care at Home gave a presentation which provided examples of person-centered, innovative care.

Mr Ian Felice, Chair of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Registrations Board presented on the work of the Board and emphasised the need to protect the public from poor practice through increasingly robust regulation. He stressed the need for nurses to openly embrace thorough regulation and professional accountability.

Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, commented: “This conference, its eminent invited speakers, workshop leaders and all involved in its organisation, proved a tremendous success in bringing our health professionals together from across the sector to discuss further ways of improving the service we provide. We are lucky to have such high quality health and care professionals in Gibraltar.”
