Nov 15 - New Company Offering Private Lessons Launches

A new company offering private lessons to help Gibraltar students “bridge the gap” between A-levels and university has recently been launched.

Fourth Estate Education, which is owned by the same company that runs Your Gibraltar TV, offers courses covering essay writing, study skills, public speaking, interview techniques, CV preparation and UCAS personal statements.

Their team of associate tutors includes Charles Durante, a former Head of English at Westside Comprehensive, Julian Felice, the current Head of Drama at Bayside and two lawyers: Philip Vasquez (author of the 'Youniversity’ student guide) and Michelle Trinidad.

Together they represent a highly qualified set of individuals with extensive experience of the academic and social challenges faced by students as they transition to university life.

Fourth Estate Education is now inviting applications from students aged 16-18 who wish to get the best possible boost before they head off for further study.

The company offers three different courses:

- a Basic package includes sessions on study skills, essay writing, proofreading, research, critical thinking, university life tips, personal statements and CV preparation.

- an Enhanced package includes, in addition to the tutorials in the Basic package, two extra sessions a month to hone debating and public speaking skills. Groups in this package will also study current affairs and explore a wider reading list to give them that essential background knowledge expected at university.

- an Ultimate package will include all of the above plus one-to-one tutorial sessions on critical thinking and essay writing.

The Director of Fourth Estate Education, Giordano Durante, said: “This is a very exciting and new concept in Gibraltar and the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Even though our schools are excellent, and many pupils achieve top grades, going to study at university is still a big leap for many. Academically, university work is far more challenging – you might be studying a subject you’ve never tackled in depth before and you might not be used to conducting research without supervision. Socially, too, university life can be difficult to adjust to.

“We think that we have brought together the best team in Gibraltar to give students essential skills so that they can make the most of their time at university. Beyond that, we feel that the skills students will acquire will also be immensely useful when they start applying for jobs once they finish their studies.”
