Feb 16 - New Power Station Awarded Ecosite Recognition

Gibraltar’s new power station has today been awarded a Bouygues Construction Ecosite certification in recognition of the “innovative and responsible measures” implemented during the construction process which minimize the impact on the environment.

Bouygues Construction launched the award in 2009 in order to set common environmental standards across all areas and trades.

The North Mole power generation facility, which is due to be completed at the end of this year, was audited according to eleven “certification themes” to determine whether work at the site was being carried out “with the greatest care for the environment and local residents.” Among these criteria are standards relating to risk analysis, noise reduction and a respect for surrounding biodiversity.

The Chief Minister, who visited the site this afternoon together with Energy Minister Dr John Cortes, said: “This demonstrates that the work that is being done at this plant is being done to the most exacting environmental standards. This power station is something to be proud of not just in terms of how it is going to generate power but also how it is being built.”

Philippe Bonnave (Chairman & CEO of Bouygues Construction) said: “The Ecosite flag is something which is very, very important for us because we have to take care of the environment and, at the same time, we have a very strong commitment to health and safety. It’s also important to say that this project is on time!”
