Jun 01 - Commemorative Plaques Unveiled At Mons Calpe Mews

Keeping in theme with being named after the Mons Calpe, commemorative plaques were unveiled at Mons Calpe Mews this morning named after the tender vessels that assisted her.

The Minister for Housing Samantha Sacramento and the Gaggero family, together with the original Mons Calpe crew and staff today were invited to the unveiling of Basha Lodge this morning.

Naming the buildings after the vessels was the brainchild of Mandy Gaggero, and to commemorate them there will be a plaque with an outline of the individual vessels and information about them.

Another plaque was unveiled in the interior building with images from the original Mons Calpe and the crew, much to the delight of all who attended.

Ms Sacramento said: “I think this idea is particularly important because apart from the older generations living in these blocks who remember how important the Mons Calpe was.

“The next generation of Gibraltarians might not necessarily know how important it was to us as a community and I think by doing this, we are recording Gibraltar’s heritage and Gibraltar’s history.”

Four more plaques will be installed at the entrance of the following blocks which were named after MH Blands tender vessels: Abyla, Express, Seagull and Express.

The remaining two blocks, Viking and Sea Master, will also have plaques installed by Wilhelmsen and Tarik Shipping, whose tender vessels they are named after.
