Jun 07 - Irish Town Brochure Launched

A brochure which combines present-day businesses together with historical facts about Irish Town will be available for tourists visiting Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo helped Patrick Sacarello, of Sacarello’s Coffee Shop, unveil the brochure which was kept behind an Irish flag.

The two-sided brochure launched yesterday evening shows a map of the different businesses and places to eat that line Irish Town, while the other side explains the history of the area, with the research carried out and put together by Dr Richard Garcia and John Langdon.

Mr Picardo said Irish Town serves all purposes of modern-day life and he enjoys being in the area, and he looks forward to walking in the area with his three children while on paternity leave later in the year.

Mr Sacarello explained that Irish Town initially served to house warehouses for businesses in Main Street, but that soon changed after a collection of traders came to the realisation that “the future of the street lay in the leisure industry”.

He said today Irish Town is a big improvement, with regenerated buildings, and it’s also become a gastronomic centre while also becoming a popular lunchtime spot, and the brochure was the brainchild of some Irish Town traders who thought it would highlight the area.

Mr Sacarello added: “At the end of the day, the success of Irish Town has been the success of its traders, where Gibraltarians have made their mark.

“We want to increase appreciation of the street and raise its image for visitors and residents alike.

“We think it is a Gibraltar model street which compliments Casemates and Main Street, and I think its compact area also helps it to have a strong identity.”

The brochure will be available to pick up from the Tourist Information Office.
